Text by Joshua Brayer – Santa Barbara News- Press When Jessica Welborn was in her late teens, her parents purchased property and the exclusive and beautiful Hollister Ranch area. She quickly fell in love with Rancho San Augustine’s rustic charm and it’s picturesque view of the ocean, and she began dreaming about getting married there. When she met Brandt it wasn’t long before those dreams started to become a lot more real.
Brandt proposed to Jessica while the couple was vacationing in Costa Rica with all of Jessica’s immediate family and a few friends. One morning Brandt and Jessica had planned a stand up paddle boarding session. While Jessica was still sleeping, Brandt woke up the rest of the family to tell them of his plan to propose, and they managed to capture it on video from the shore while Brandt attempted a proposal in some pretty hectic surf conditions.
The couple planed their wedding for January 5, 2013 at Rancho San Augustine – the Welborn family vacation home in Hollister Ranch with the help of Zohe Felici of Felici Events. “Rancho San Augustine has been an incredibly special place for my family to gather for the last 15 years”, said Jessica. “In the Winter the Monarch butterflies literally drip from the eucalyptus trees. It is truly magical. Brandt and I got married under the eucalyptus trees with the Monarch butterflies surrounding us!”
Many couples have been opting for idyllic settings for their big day and Rancho San Augustine, with its warm animals, fruit trees, barn, and panoramic view of the ocean certainly set the tone for the Welborns. Hollister Ranch is known for its unblemished landscape and this proved true when, not long before the ceremony, a bobcat was spotted stealthily hunting prey in the spacious backyard.
Brandt, who took Jessica’s last name in part because “her family is so cool” and because there are no men to carry on the Welbore name among Jessica’s siblings, went to great lengths to include his new family in every step of the wedding. Prior to the Costa Rica trip, he ventured to Rancho Santa Fe, near Encinitas, to ask Jessica’s grandmother for her permission to marry her granddaughter. While there, Jessica’s grandmother produced several boxes of jewelry from which Brandt could choose a ring for Jessica. He chose a plain gold band which they later discovered was Jessica’s grandfather’s wedding band. Jessica later had it melted down and used to create her wedding rings, a task performed by Los Olivos jeweler Johnny Ninos.
The couple chose to write their own wedding vows which they read like a dialogue back-and-forth to each other, and concluded with their personal intimate expression to each other “I love you fierce.” The couple used local vendors for their food (New West Catering) and beverages (Sandford Winery and Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co) as well as their cake (Enjoy Cupcakes in Los Olivos), and Photographer (Willa Kveta Photography in Santa Barbara), however the Hollister Ranch venue with its gorgeous Oceanview stole the show at the Welborn wedding.
